Accident Reconstruction

EFI Global experts frequently reconstruct crashes in order to determine fault and other causal effects.  In a case involving a fatality crash, our expertise was retained when the surviving driver was going to be prosecuted for criminally negligent homicide.  Utilizing the crash reconstruction data and the information stored in the vehicles’ air bag sensors, our experts concluded the original investigation was performed using the incorrect calculations.  Not only did the criminal complaint against the driver fail to materialize, EFI Global identified a serious road design defect that was primarily responsible for the collision.

Forensic Biomechanics

Occasionally, national media outlets contact EFI Global regarding cases involving significant loss.  Specifically, the Discovery Channel featured EFI Global in its impact biomechanics episode entitled “Crash Detectives.”  The case involved a police investigation that misidentified the drivers of a violent two-fatality collision.  Utilizing expertise in forensic biomechanics, our experts reconstructed the crash and identified the responsible driver after inspecting the vehicle and reviewing the results of the autopsy.  Subsequently, the police revised their report to reflect the conclusion of EFI Global.

Chemical Analysis to Determine Spontaneous Combustion

A week before a judgment was to be rendered in a house fire investigation in the Bahamas, EFI Global was requested to provide laboratory analysis on the roof material claimed to have spontaneously combusted.  Within two days of the trial, our scientists collected samples at the scene and conducted interviews with local witnesses who reported a nearby brush fire occurring earlier on the date of loss.  After careful examination, lab analysis confirmed that the material was not of the composition to result in spontaneous combustion, but rather flying embers in the area combining with wind conditions ignited the roof material, proving accidental cause.

Expedited Laboratory Response Efforts

Within hours of an LP gas explosion in the Northwestern U.S., EFI Global immediately assembled and expedited an LP gas sampling kit to the loss site.  Due to the extremely remote geographical area, an EFI Global chemist researched and promptly located a shipper that provided next day service to the loss location.  The client received the kit the following day, collected the sample, and used the provided shipping materials to return the sample to the EFI Global chemistry lab overnight for analysis of odorant and hydrocarbon composition.

DNA Analysis Identifies Fungal Growth

EFI Global partnered with a major Houston-area hospital in a collaborative research project involving the tracking of DNA strain-specific fungi species.  In order to determine the point of origin, numerous samples were collected throughout the hospital’s facilities, including 60 patient rooms.  All fungi samples were analyzed and certain fungal contaminants were isolated for DNA strain typing using rep-PCR (repetitive sequence based Polymerase Chain Reaction).  From the DNA fingerprinting of the isolated fungal species, EFI Global helped identify the origin of contamination in order to develop a strategy to prevent further fungal growth within the hospital.

Occupational Safety Training – Canadian Facilities

EFI Global personnel assisted a national client at its Canadian-based clothing manufacturing center with the preparation and distribution of training materials for multi-state and international seminars on occupational safety training.  The seminars were conducted to update the client's management and staff personnel on the policies and procedures of working around hazardous materials and provided assistance in the assembly of facility documentation for archives as required by pertinent regulations.

HAZMAT and Emergency Response Training

EFI Global provided HAZMAT and emergency response training to one of the largest diversified manufacturers in the U.S., in addition to on-site safety management services for contractors performing construction and outage work at this facility.  Through training and development of Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) compliant safety programs and on-site safety management, our client noticed an increase in employee safety performance, and the contractor accident rate dropped significantly, resulting in substantial property damage savings and minimizing loss of productivity.

ISO 14001 Registration – multiple sites across Mexico

EFI Global assisted in the certification of the largest brewer in Mexico to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard.  Our personnel performed the registration audits and surveillance audits during the registration period for the client’s eight autonomous manufacturing facilities throughout Mexico.  The purpose of the audits was to ensure that the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System was effectively implemented and maintained according to the standard and the client’s own policies and procedures.

Flexible Environmental Management Systems Tool

To assist with a client’s compliance planning, EFI Global created a computer based environmental management system designed to be compatible with ISO 14001 requirements.  After examining numerous federal environmental regulations and their applicability to each of the client’s 14 manufacturing locations, our experts identified the tasks and actions required to facilitate compliance.  These tasks were matched and integrated with existing plant practices to create a powerful yet flexible environmental management tool.

ISO 14001 Registration – multiple sites across U.S.

EFI Global performed registration audits and surveillance audits during a 4-year registration period for a company providing remediation and abatement services to the federal government.  The sites were located across the U.S. and included Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and other governmental agency sites with identified and characterized environmental pollution that posed a significant threat to the environment.  All sites audited were in various stages of design, remediation or closure.  The purpose of the audit was to ensure that the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System was effectively implemented and maintained according to the standard and the client’s own policies and procedures.
